Regenerations Botanical Garden has some great educational opportunities coming up, and we invite you to join us:

The Sustainable Gardening & Farming Training Course at KCC begins Saturday, October 8, and continues on Saturdays from 1-6pm through December 17. As an instructor of the course, Regenerations director Paul Massey provides a focus on plant diversity and seed saving. This semester the course will also feature a hands-on workshop planting kalo (taro), as we rotate our collection of 38 cultivars from Regenerations Seed Garden to the campus. The Seed Garden is also a satellite training site during the course, where students will put into practice the information presented in class. Many students from past semesters have contributed to the Seed Garden over the last year and we–and the plants–are very grateful for their positive energy and hard work.

To register call 245-8318. For more information click here, or call Paul at 652-7898.

The Seed Basics Workshop for Gardeners & Farmers will be held November 6th and 7th at Kaua’i Community College and Regenerations Seed Garden. We are very excited to collaborate with the Kohala Center and researchers from the University of Hawaii's College of Tropical Agriculture on this two-day introductory workshop on seed production and saving techniques.

This workshop grew out of the Public Seed Symposium held on Hawai’i Island in 2010. At that event, Regenerations hosted Hawai’i's first statewide seed exchange. As our Seed and Plant Exchanges have expanded over the years, we have seen a renewal of interest in seed saving and a growing demand for information. Regenerations has held numerous seed saving workshops on Kaua’i over the past four years and this upcoming workshop will bring the training to a new level of excellence.

The cost of the workshop is $50 for both days and includes Seed Basics Manual—Year 1, gourmet lunches by Chef Keli Ranke, and an optional farm tour on Wednesday, November 8th to Sun & Lisa's One Song Farm in Moloa’a. Full Scholarships will be offered to Kaua‘i youth (ages 14-21) who are interested in agriculture.
For more information and to register visit the Hawai’i Public Seed Initiative.

Paul Massey will be offering thoughts on "Healing our Relationship with Plants" at a 11am presentation on Saturday, October 15th at the Kaua’i Healing Garden Festival. The festival will be held at Kilohana Plantation in Puhi from 10am to 5pm. Regenerations will also have sought-after medicinal plants for sale including mamaki and ’awa (kava kava). Come by our tent to sample mamaki tea; if you haven't tried it, you'll be surprised by the delicious and refreshing taste of this native nettles tree.

We’re also looking for people to help with setup, staffing, and breakdown of the Regenerations booth. Please email info@ribg.org if you are interested in joining our team. For complete information on the Healing Garden Festival, visit hawaiihealthguide.com.

Also as part of the Healing Garden Festival, Na Keiki o Ka ’Aina in Kapa’a will host Poisons in Paradise on Friday, October 14, 7:00pm to 8:30pm with Dr. Lorrin Pang, MD, MHD of GMO Free Kaua’i. Regenerations will be sharing a positive message of solutions-oriented change at the event. More on this event here.

After the September Seed Exchange at Regenerations Seed Garden in Kalihiwai we joked that our work was done there because “the garden was finished.” It is indeed a quieter, slower time in the garden, but we continue to grow out plants for seed and other regenerative material while maintaining our diverse collection of long-term plantings. We are entering the prime season now for seed-saving, as well, and enjoying the collection process.

If you appreciated the Seed Garden at the Exchange or have ever loved its peace and beauty as we do, please consider coming out to lend a hand for a while. Whether you are a gardening pro or have never pulled a weed, we can use your help for any length of time.

Our schedule for community work days is:
Wednesday 9am-5pm
Saturday 10am-6pm

Call Marshall at (808) 344-6796 or Paul at 652-4118 for more information. We look forward to seeing you there!
